How to read a Wright safety rating

Safety footwear markings identify the standard, protection classification and additional tested properties. These markings help you compare models, but the correct choice depends on the hazards and requirements of the workplace.

The two classes in this range

ClassIn shortWhat it covers
S3SIncludes a non-metallic penetration-resistant insert tested using a 3 mm nail, alongside the other protections required by the classification.Protective toecap, closed heel, antistatic properties, energy absorption in the heel, resistance to water penetration and absorption by the upper (WPA), penetration resistance and cleated outsole. Suitable for many site-work environments, depending on the workplace hazards.
S7SIncludes the S3S requirements plus WR whole-footwear water resistance. All S3S protections plus whole-footwear water resistance. Suitable for wet outdoor working conditions where the additional water resistance is needed, subject to the workplace risk assessment.

Penetration resistance: P, PL and PS

Under the 2022 revision the old single "P" marking was split three ways, because a non-metallic insert is tested differently from a steel one.

P, PL and PS identify different penetration-resistance tests. P uses a metallic insert, while PL and PS use non-metallic inserts tested with different nail diameters. Check the marking on the individual boot to identify the protection provided.

The additional markings you will see

CodeMeaning
SRAdditional slip resistance, tested on ceramic tile with glycerol
FOOutsole resistance to fuel oil and hydrocarbons
WRWhole-footwear water resistance
SCAbrasion resistance of the scuff cap (protective toe covering)
LGLadder grip
MMetatarsal protection
HROOutsole resistance to hot contact

When comparing footwear, check which version of EN ISO 20345 applies and which slip-resistance markings are shown. Older SRC markings and the newer SR marking refer to different test requirements, so they should not be treated as equivalent claims.

Choosing a Wright model by sector

Start from the hazards at the workstation rather than the job title. Two people with the same role can need different footwear if one is indoors on dry concrete and the other is outside in mud.

SectorFootwear selectionWhat to look for
Construction & civil engineeringSafety footwear suited to site conditions and identified risks.Penetration protection, suitable tread and, where required, metatarsal protection (M) or ladder grip (LG).
Mechanics & industrial maintenanceFootwear suited to workshop hazards.Fuel-oil resistance (FO), slip resistance (SR) and heat-resistant outsoles (HRO) where required.
Food production & cateringFootwear suited to hygiene requirements and floor conditions.Slip resistance, easy cleaning and materials suitable for the working environment.
Warehousing & logisticsFootwear suited to handling tasks and prolonged wear.Appropriate toe protection, fit, grip and heel energy absorption (E) where required.
Engineering & manufacturingFootwear suited to machinery, materials and workplace hazards.Appropriate toe and penetration protection, outsole grip and electrostatic discharge (ESD) properties where specified.
Utilities, telecoms & field engineeringFootwear suited to outdoor work and access requirements.Water resistance, suitable tread and ladder grip (LG) where required.

Footwear requirements depend on the specific workplace hazards. Always check the product's certified specifications and manufacturer's guidance before selecting footwear. This guide is for general information and does not replace a workplace risk assessment.

Getting the Right Fit

Well-fitting safety footwear can help support comfort and encourage consistent wear. Consider these practical points when choosing footwear for your team:

  • Try with work socks. Check the fit with the socks normally worn on the job.
  • Allow enough toe room. Ensure toes can move comfortably without contacting the toe cap during normal movement.
  • Check the size range. Confirm available sizes for each individual model before ordering.
  • Monitor condition. Inspect footwear regularly and replace it when damaged or no longer suitable.
  • Check the style. Different boots, hikers and trainers may fit differently, so assess each model individually.

For larger teams, contact us to discuss your footwear requirements and available sizing options.

Care, Inspection and Replacement

Regular care and inspection help keep safety footwear in suitable condition. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning, maintenance and replacement.

  • Clean and dry correctly. Remove dirt after use and allow footwear to dry naturally, away from direct heat.
  • Check the outsole. Look for worn tread, damage or separation that may affect grip or the footwear's condition.
  • Inspect protective components. Check for visible damage to the toe area, sole and other protective features.
  • Keep records where appropriate. Recording inspections and replacements can help manage footwear issued to staff.
  • Replace damaged footwear. Follow the manufacturer's guidance and do not use footwear that may no longer provide the required protection.

There is no universal replacement interval for all safety footwear. How often it needs replacing depends on its condition, frequency of use and working environment.

Wright Footwear FAQs

What is the Wright safety footwear range?

The Wright range includes safety boots, hiker-style footwear and trainers. Each model has its own specification, safety classification and available sizes. Check individual product listings for details.

What does S3S mean?

S3S is a safety footwear classification under EN ISO 20345:2022. It includes toe protection, a closed heel, antistatic properties, heel energy absorption, water-resistant upper performance, a cleated outsole and non-metallic penetration resistance tested using a 3 mm nail. Always check the individual product's certification and markings.

How is S7S different from S3S?

S7S includes the S3S protection requirements, with an additional whole-footwear water-resistance requirement (WR). This differs from WPA, which relates to water penetration and absorption of the upper. The appropriate classification depends on the working conditions and required protection.

Are Wright boots metal-free?

Selected Wright models are described as metal-free and feature non-metallic toe caps and penetration-resistant inserts. Check the individual product specifications to confirm its construction and suitability for your workplace.
