First aid provision begins with risk assessment

Workplace first-aid provision should be based on a risk assessment, taking account of the size and nature of your workplace, the risks present and the equipment needed to respond effectively.

A complete first-aid provision may include standard workplace kits, specialist burns and eye-wash products, accessible defibrillators and trauma-response equipment for high-risk areas. The right combination will depend on the hazards identified in your workplace risk assessment.

Choose the Right Workplace Kit

The size of a workplace kit should reflect both staff numbers and the level of hazard present:

Kit sizeLow-hazard workplaceHigh-hazard workplace
SmallUp to 25 staffUp to 5 staff
MediumUp to 100 staffUp to 25 staff
LargeMore than 100 staffMore than 25 staff

Travel and motoring provision is recommended at one kit per company vehicle. Personal-issue kits offer a practical option for individual first aiders, key staff and people working away from a communal kit.

Keep First Aid Ready for Use

First-aid kits should remain fully stocked and ready when needed. Refill packs provide a practical way to replace used or expired contents, helping maintain the appropriate products and quantities without replacing the entire kit.

Refills are available for workplace and catering first-aid kits.

What the 2026 amendment means for workplace first aid

The current British Standard, BS 8599-1:2019+A1:2026, includes guidance on workplace first-aid kits and the provision and placement of AEDs. Your workplace first-aid provision should be based on your risk assessment.

AED access
Businesses with an estimated 5 or more people on site should provide access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The AED should be accessible within two minutes from any point on the premises and should be registered with the National Defibrillator Network, The Circuit. Cabinets should be clearly marked and accessible in an emergency. Shop our range β†’

Burns first aid
Consider a burns first-aid kit where your risk assessment identifies a burn risk. Where facial-burn risk is identified, consider appropriate face-burn dressings as part of your provision. In high-risk environments, employers must provide adequate burn care equipment based on a formal first-aid needs assessment. Shop our range β†’

Eye-wash first aid
Provide appropriate eye-wash equipment wherever a first-aid needs assessment identifies a risk of eye injury. In high-risk environments, sterile eye-wash facilities must be clearly marked, easily accessible, and positioned within immediate reach of the hazard zone. Shop our range β†’
